A Week of Action for Period Dignity: Walking, Playing, and Empowering a Generation

Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld

In a society where far too many girls still miss opportunities because of period poverty, stigma, and misinformation, a powerful movement unfolded in Abuja that reminded us of a simple truth: menstruation should never be a barrier to education, confidence, leadership, or dreams.

As part of the global commemoration of Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026, Get Educate Them (GET) International proudly joined hands with Pad-Up Africa, Empowered Girls for Christ Foundation (EGCF), Shamies Unusual Heart Foundation, and other partners to deliver A Week of Action for Period Dignity—a series of impactful events designed to educate, empower, and advocate for girls and young women across the Federal Capital Territory.

From a symbolic advocacy walk at Millennium Park to an inspiring Menstrual Sports Day at the University of Abuja, the week became a powerful demonstration that when organizations collaborate around a common purpose, meaningful change becomes possible.

WALK4PAD 2026: Every Step for a Girl’s Dignity

On Saturday, May 23, participants gathered at Millennium Park, Abuja, for WALK4PAD 2026, a symbolic advocacy walk held under the global Menstrual Hygiene Day theme, “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.”

The walk brought together development organizations, volunteers, advocates, students, community leaders, and passionate citizens united by a common goal: ending period poverty and breaking the silence surrounding menstruation.

As participants walked through the park, they carried a message louder than words: every girl deserves access to menstrual products, accurate information, safe facilities, and the dignity to manage her period without shame.

The event also featured awareness sessions focused on menstrual health education, community engagement, and discussions around the realities many girls face due to limited access to menstrual hygiene products. According to reports from the event, one-year menstrual hygiene kits and dignity packs were provided to vulnerable girls and women, while advocates continued to call for stronger support systems and policies that address period poverty in Nigeria.

For GET International, the walk represented more than an event—it reflected our long-standing commitment to ensuring that no girl is forced to choose between her education and her menstrual health.

Menstrual Sports Day: Challenging Myths Through Action

The momentum continued on Monday, May 25, at the University of Abuja Permanent Site with the highly anticipated Menstrual Sports Day.

For generations, myths have suggested that girls should avoid physical activity during menstruation. These misconceptions have often discouraged participation in sports, reduced confidence, and reinforced harmful stereotypes.

Menstrual Sports Day challenged those narratives head-on.

Through sporting activities, team engagement, and educational conversations, participants demonstrated that menstruation is not a limitation. Instead, it is a natural part of life that should never prevent girls from participating fully in school, leadership, recreation, or athletics.

The event embraced the powerful message:

“Play. Empower. Change.”

Young women took to the field not just as athletes but as ambassadors of confidence, resilience, and equality. The atmosphere was filled with energy, encouragement, and a renewed commitment to normalizing conversations around menstrual health.

The initiative also aligned with broader advocacy efforts emphasizing that girls can remain active, healthy, and productive throughout their menstrual cycles when supported with the right information and resources.

Why This Matters

Period poverty remains a significant challenge for millions of girls worldwide. Lack of access to sanitary products, inadequate menstrual education, and persistent stigma continue to impact attendance in school, participation in community life, and overall well-being.

The consequences extend beyond health. They affect confidence, educational outcomes, economic opportunities, and social inclusion.

This is why the work of organizations committed to menstrual dignity remains critical.

At GET International, we believe that empowering girls begins with ensuring they have the resources, knowledge, and support needed to thrive. Menstrual health is not merely a women’s issue—it is an education issue, a health issue, a human rights issue, and a development issue.

The Power of Partnership

One of the most inspiring aspects of the Week of Action was the spirit of collaboration.

Real and lasting change happens when organizations, businesses, institutions, and individuals come together around a shared vision. Through strategic partnerships and collective action, the initiative reached more communities, amplified advocacy efforts, and strengthened the movement for menstrual dignity.

We are grateful to every partner, volunteer, donor, participant, and advocate who contributed their time, resources, and voice to this important cause.

Together, we proved that impact grows when purpose is shared.

Looking Ahead

While Menstrual Hygiene Day may come once a year, our commitment continues every day.

GET International remains dedicated to:

  • Expanding menstrual health education.
  • Supporting girls with menstrual hygiene resources.
  • Advocating for period-friendly schools and communities.
  • Promoting youth empowerment and gender equality.
  • Building partnerships that create sustainable impact.

The Week of Action may have ended, but the movement continues.

Every conversation started.
Every myth challenged.
Every girl empowered.
Every step taken.

They all bring us closer to a future where no girl is held back by her period.

Together, we walk.

Together, we educate.

Together, we empower.

Together, we build a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.

GET International remains committed to ensuring that every girl has the dignity, confidence, and opportunity she deserves. ✨
