Donation of Sanitary Pads: Making a Difference in Menstrual Hygiene
Addressing Menstrual Poverty
One of the key global challenges faced by women and girls is the inability to afford sanitary pads. Recognizing this critical need, our organization partnered with the Pad Up Africa initiative to donate 200 sanitary pads. This effort was aimed at improving menstrual hygiene, particularly in underserved communities, and ensuring that women and young girls have access to basic hygiene supplies. The sanitary pads were distributed during an outreach event on 29th May 2024, directly benefiting young girls experiencing menstrual poverty. This initiative not only enhances health and dignity but also reduces the financial burden on families by providing these essential products.
Participation in the Walk: Impact and Outcomes
Our collaboration with Pad Up Africa and participation in World Menstrual Hygiene Day activities on 29th May 2024 had a significant impact on the women and young girls in attendance, as well as on our organization. The distribution of sanitary pads addressed immediate needs and helped reduce absenteeism in schools and workplaces due to menstrual-related issues. Furthermore, the walk highlighted the importance of creating a supportive environment for young women and girls, encouraging more inclusive policies and practices.
For our organization, this initiative reinforced our commitment to social responsibility and community engagement. It provided our team with firsthand experience of the challenges faced by young women and girls, particularly in low-resource settings. This experience has inspired us to consider more sustainable and long-term solutions, such as supporting menstrual education programs and advocating for policy changes to provide free or subsidized menstrual products in all public places in Nigeria.
Reflection on the Theme: Together for a Period-Friendly World
“Together for a Period-Friendly World,” this year’s World Menstrual Hygiene Day theme, perfectly captures the spirit of our partnership. It emphasizes the importance of collaboration and collective effort in addressing menstrual hygiene challenges. By working with Pad Up Africa, we were able to amplify our impact, pool resources, and share expertise. This theme serves as a reminder that everyone in society—businesses, non-profits, governments, and individuals—must remain committed to creating a world that is period-friendly.
Through our collective actions, we can ensure that menstrual hygiene products are accessible to all, fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.
